On March 14, 2024, a total lunar eclipse was visible for most of the Americas. This event is also know as a 'Blood Moon' because of the color cast onto the moon's surface by the sunlight being refracted by the Earth's atmosphere. This is the same phenomenon that causes sunsets on Earth to look orange to red.
The penumbral eclipse began at 11:57:28 pm EDT on March 13. The partial eclipse began at 1:09:40am EDT on March 14. The full eclipse, which is the phase in which the moon's surface turns red, began at 2:26:06am and lasted until 3:31:26am. The maximum eclipse was at 2:58:43am.
I captured a the above image, along with the images that were used to create the timelapse below, with the following equipment:
Orion ED80CF Telescope
Skywatcher Wave 150i Mount with carbon fiber tripod and pier extension
Orion Field Flattener
ZWO ASI 224MC Pro Camera
Pegasus Powerbox Advanced
Mele Quieter 2 Mini Computer
I captured the images using Sharpcap software by taking 30sec videos every 1 minute from the beginning of the partial phase until its conclusion. The images were processed using AutoStakert 4.0, imPPG, and Adobe Photoshop 2025. The timelapse was created using Adobe Premier Pro 2025.
